Painted Bodies

Dodge Ram With Splash Design

This body was basically the design I put on my Jeep CJ8. However this time around I painted the scheme on a Pro-line Dodge Ram.

This design is based off of a couple of different ideas I had. The splash effect is a pretty obvious aspect of the design, and is similar to a scheme I have painted before. The splash design is the pattern I created, not a precut mask. You can download this design from my Masks and Templates Section.

The orange/yellow base color was inspired by a couple of other painted bodies I've seen while flipping through the advertisements and articles in several RC magazines. The lighter colors for the background really help make the splash the focal point of the design, while adding some color to the rest of the body as well.

I did decide to add one other extra touch to this truck in the form of a carbon-fiber bed. It's a rather simple trick that's been documented many times. It involves two colors of paint and cabinet or toolbox matting.

I usually try to show a body sitting on a T-Maxx. However, since this body will be sold, I didn't cut any holes in it. So without the hole for the motor, the motor head will not allow the body to sit low enough. It didn't give a true picture of the body on the T-Maxx, so I chose to take the pictures below of just the body itself. However since the Electric Stampede don't have a motor head to get in the way, I was able to take some pictures of it on that chassis. It works pretty well on the Stampede, and provided you have a wheelie bar on the back seems to fit rather well.

I used the following colors.

I applied the windows masks and followed that with several coats of liquid masking throughout the entire inside of the body. I then laid out the design with a permanent marker on the outside of the vehicle. Once that was completed I used a hobby knife to make all my cuts where the masking would be peeled away as I applied the colors.

The first area I painted was the carbon-fiber bed. I removed the liquid masking from this area, and then cut the toolbox matting so that it fit the area I wished to paint. I started by spraying several coats of Faspearl Charcoal. Then I removed the matting and sprayed Fasblack over the rest of the area.

Then I focused my attention on the splash design itself. I used Faswhite on a small paintbrush to add the white haighlights. Once that was done I mixed Faspearl Blue and Faspearl Charcoal to end up with a darker blue and sprayed the edges of the design. Then I finished out the water by sparying the rest of the design with Faspearl Blue and backing it with Faswhite.

After painting the splash design, I removed the remainder of the liquid masking that covered the rest of the body with would end up with orange or yellow. However first I needed to add a shadow around a portion of the splash design. For that I used Fasblack, and sprayed it around the desired area. I then used the Fasorange and just randomly sprayed the area behind the splash and a few other areas of the truck. Following that I sprayed the remainder of the Jeep with Fasyellow. After that was complete, I backed the entire truck with Faswhite.
