Painted Bodies

Parma 1/18 Panel Truck With Flames

This body was to be used on my youngest son's Venom Mini-Giant. I wanted something to set it apart from the stock body, so I went with a 1/18 50's Panel Truck that was made for the Team Losi Mini-T.

I knew before I started to paint the body I would need to stay on the simple side. There's not a lot of room inside the small body, and any detailed design would be harder to pull off effectively because of the small space. Plus the smaller sides meant there would be less area to paint the design on.

I drew the flames on by hand, following a general design I've used before. I just had to make them smaller to fit on the smaller body size. I also wanted to incorporate his name into the design somehow, so as he gets a little older he'll recognize it on the truck.

I used the following colors.

The first thing I did was to take the clear body and mark, with a permanent marker, the location for the body posts. It's easiest to do this while the body is still clear. Then I applied the windows masks and followed that with several coats of liquid masking throughout the entire inside of the body. I then laid out the design with a permanent marker on the outside of the vehicle. Once that was completed I used a hobby knife to make all my cuts where the masking would be peeled away as I applied the colors.

I first focused my attention towards the flame portion of the design. After removing the liquid masking for this area, I mixed a little bit of red with some orange to develop a darker shade of orange to shoot the rear portion of the flames with. Then I shot the middle of the flames with orange straight out of the bottle, and finished up the front with white. I backed the entire flame design with the Faswhite while using it.

Next I focused on the "Dylan Digger" text. Once the liquid masking was removed, I sprayed a light coating of Faschange Blue. Then I followed the Faschange Blue with Fasred.

Once the text was complete, I focused on the remainder of the body. I peeled off the rest of the liquid masking and spayed a coat of Faschange Blue over the remainder of the body. I used Faspearl White behind it, which gives it the same blue highlights as the text except they're set against white instead of red. I then backed the entire body with white.

With the design painting out of the way, I then backed the entire job with clear lacquer to protect the paint from moisture. Then I removed the window masking and cut my body post holes and cooling holes. To round out the body I applied the Parma stickers for the headlights and grille, and finished it off with a couple of Misbehavin' RC stickers.
