Ford F-350 With American FlagThis is another take on the American Flag design featured in RCCA. However this time around I painted it on a Pro-Line Ford F-350. I had previously painted this design on a SUV body and wanted to see how well it looked on a truck body. While I can't take credit for this design, I did draw up flag and star templates to help myself apply it to the body. You can download these templates from my Masks and Templates Section. I did decide to add one other extra touch to this truck in the form of a carbon-fiber bed. It's a rather simple trick that's been documented many times. It involves two colors of paint and cabinet or toolbox matting. I usually try to show a body sitting on a T-Maxx. However, since this body will be sold, I didn't cut any holes in it. So without the hole for the motor, the motor head will not allow the body to sit low enough. It didn't give a true picture of the body on the T-Maxx, so I chose to take the pictures below of just the body itself. However since the Electric Stampede don't have a motor head to get in the way, I was able to take some pictures of it on that chassis. If you have a wheelie bar on the back of the Stampede this body seems to fit rather well.
I also used the following colors. I first applied several coats of liquid masking throughout the entire inside of the body. Then I then laid out the design with a permanent marker on the outside of the body. Once that was completed I used a hobby knife to make all my cuts where the masking would be peeled away as I applied the colors. The first area I painted was the carbon-fiber bed. I removed the liquid masking from this area, and then cut the toolbox matting so that it fit the area I wished to paint. I started by spraying several coats of Faspearl Charcoal. Then I removed the matting and sprayed Fasblack over the rest of the area. Then I pulled up the liquid masking around the area that would be blue. I applied vinyl stars that I had printed and cut out of a Parma Uncut Vinyl Mask Sheet, and then sprayed the blue over the front of the body. Following that I removed the stars and spayed the enitre area with Faswhite, which made the stars white and backed the blue at the same time. I then removed the small strip of liquid masking for the gold stipe and painted it. Following that, I painted the main body color of silver after I removed the liquid masking from that area. For the darker red areas, of the red stripes, I deviated from the article and used red with a few drops of black. Then over that I sprayed the base red color. Over the gray, I shot white and then filled in the stars on the hood. I also backed all the colors with white at this point. A full walkthrough of the paint scheme can be found in the February 2002 issue of RCCA magazine.
