Painted Bodies

Dodge Powerwagon With Flames

It didn’t take long for my dad’s stock Savage body to become trashed. I swear, I had nothing to do with it…well, maybe just a little! So he picked up a Pro-Line Dodge Powerwagon as a replacement, and I painted it for him.

An older-style truck such as this always seems to work well with flames, so that seemed to be an obvious choice in regards to a paint scheme. I also wanted to give the truck a wooden bed look, as very few bodies look well with this treatment. The Powerwagon would certainly be one of them.

For the flames I used the flames pattern from RCXotic. I printed out their pattern and traced it onto a Parma Uncut Vinyl Mask Sheet and cut it out. A big thanks to RCExotic and the designer of the pattern, Ashneel Singh.

The design looks like the following, and is available in 1:10 scale at the above link.

I used the following colors.

I brushed on several coats of liquid masking after applying the supplied window masks and, after transferring the design to the front of the body, I cut the design out. I cut the entire bed out, as if it were one solid part without the raised portions in it. Other areas that were cut out included the running boards, toolbox in the bed, and the winch up front. I planned to start with the blue background color, so I then peeled up all sections that would be blue.

The blue was to be given a color-shift treatment. So I started by spraying some Faschange Red, and then followed it up with some Fasescent Blue. This provides a color shift from blue to purple as the light hits the truck. Once the blue was painted, I then shifted to the bed of the truck.

Once the masking was removed from the truck bed, I used a paintbrush to color the raised areas of the bed black. I followed this by spraying some dark brown throughout the bed. Then I went back over the brown with a dry 1/2 inch paint brush to help create the illusion of texture. I followed up by using the Fasbeige to fill in the gaps I created with the paint brush.

Next, I used some silver to paint the running boards and toolbox. I also used the silver for the sides of the winch. The winch’s cable was painted grey, while the winch’s motor was painted black. At that point, I back everything in white to protect it from any other colors I would be spraying.

The flames were the last step. I lightened some yellow by mixing it with some white. I then painted the upper edges of the flames with the yellow, and followed up by filling in the rest of the flames with the standard shade of Fasyellow. The orange flames were done in the same fashion, except with orange. Before painting the orange though I used some Fasred, on a paintbrush, to color in the running lights on the top of the truck.

Once the painting was out of the way, I then backed the entire job with clear lacquer to protect the paint from water and nitro fuel. Then I removed the window masking and cut my body post holes and cooling holes.
