Painted Bodies

Silverado With Flames and Checkerboard Design

With this body I took the basic flame design from the PT Cruiser and then added some more on the top. I also increased the complexity of the design by making the base color, of the truck, a two tone combination of metallic blue and metallic green. I also added a checkboard design around the rear wheels.

I started out with a 2001 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab Body from Pro-line. This is a Maxx truck body that works on both the Maxx and the Stampede.

For the flames I used the flames pattern from RC Tech. I printed out their pattern and traced it onto a Parma Uncut Vinyl Mask Sheet and cut it out. A big thanks to RCExotic and the designer of the pattern, Ashneel Singh.

The design looks like the following, and is available in 1:10 scale at the above link.

I also used the following colors in Faskolor paints.

Since I plan on just selling the body to someone I didn't mark a location for the body posts. After all I'm not sure what they'll mount it on. So I applied the paint mask, and made some marks showing where I wanted the color change and checkerboard design area with a permanant marker. This body actually uses an overspray film so you don't have to worry about removing the marks afterwards with rubbing alcohol. The marks are on the clear film and are gone once you pull it off.

I've used masking tape to mark out the bed of the truck which I will paint black. The body had a Chevy bowtie emblem molded into the back. I masked it as well, since I planned to paint the bowtie green and blue to match the base color of the truck. You may also notice the making tape on the rear of the vehicle. Underneath the tape I've already laid out my checkerboard design with more masking tape. This way when I have painted the green and blue, I can just peel off the first layer of tape and shoot the dark squares.

Below are some pictures showing the Silverado with it's window and flame masks applied.

I then painted the top half of the truck metallic green and the lower half metallic blue. At this time I also painted the Chevy bowtie on the truck bed.

After that I removed the masking tape at the rear of the truck, and painted my neon yellow highlighting. I used the charcoal black for the dark colored checker squares. Then I pulled the masking tape up that protected what would will be the white squares. I also removed the flame paint masks.

The next few stages were done fairly close together and during them I forgot to snap pictures of each step. To summarize, I highlighted around the dark checker squares with the grey, and then sprayed the orange portion of the flames. I followed that with the yellow for the center of the flames, and finished by spraying white over the remaining portions of the body and checkerboard area. Then I coated everything with a top coat of white.

Below are some pictures of the body after the excess lexan has been removed. Before cutting the body out, I used a few coats of Pactra R/C Acrylic Transparent Smoke to give the windows a tinted look.

Here's a couple of shots with the body sitting on top of the stock body posts.
