Replacing the Bellcrank Bushings

The Maxx comes stock with plastic bushings installed in the steering bellcrank assembly. At first these are fine, but over time they will wear and need replacement. Instead of using the stock plastic bushing as a replacement, you can use 5x8 bearings. You'll need 4 5x8 bearings such as these offered by Traxxas. Not only will this eliminate having to replace a worn bushing later, but you will be rewarded with a steering bellcrank that operates much more smoothly.

The first thing you'll need to do, is to remove the two screws that secure the upper portion of the bellcrank. Their location is marked on the picture below. You should make note of the fact that I've replaced these screws with some hex head screws. If yours are stock, they will actually be Phillips head screws.

Then flip the truck upside down and remove the screws that attach the skid plate to the underside of the chassis. After you remove the screws, remove the skid plate itself.

The next thing you want to do is to remove the servo saver from the servo. Then you can simply twist the bellcrank posts back, so that you can access both sides.

Now pull the plastic spacer off of the end of each bellcrank post.

Now remove the blue aluminum post, and pull out the stock plastic bushings. Using your 5x8 bearings, reinstall them in place of the plastic bushings.

Finally you need to reassemble the bell crank and the other items you removed. When that is complete, you're done.
