MIP CVD's (Constant Velocity Drives)

Installation


At first assembling CVD's and installing them on your Stampede can seem a little intimidating. However as you'll soon see by reading this walkthrough, it's very simple. As another benefit, once CVD's are installed it's much easier to get inside the transmission should you ever need to, as you will no longer have to fool with snapping the u-joint in and out of the plastic yoke.

The first thing you need to do is to place a thin coating of MIP lube on the coupling that fits inside the axle.




Once the coupling has been lubed insert it into the axle.




Now you need to put some MIP lube in the cup end of the dogbone and place the dogbone over the axle end. Next slide the cross pin through the hole in one side of the dogbone and through the hole in the coupling, Finish by pushing the pin into the hole on the opposite side of the dogbone. Once completed the pin should be flush with the dogbone. The picture below shows the pin halfway inserted into the dogbone and coupling.




Then, using the small grub screw and a .050 hex wrench, secure the cross pin by tightening the grub screw into the side of the coupling. Note that the grub screw will only screw into one side of the coupling. I would also suggest you use a small drop of lock-tite on the set screw.




To prevent problems with the cross pin becoming loose, as explained on the first page of this article, I would suggest the use of shrink tubing around the dogbone to axle joint. So slide a small section of tubing over the joint...




...and then heat it with a lighter until it shrinks to fit the joint. Once that's complete you can trim the excess shrink tubing away so that it doesn't interfere with the flexibility of the joint itself. You can also use these CVD Bulletproofing Methods to help decrease the chances of the cross pin coming loose even more.




When installing the axle into the bearing/bushing carrier it's important to realize the proper order in which you should install the washers and bearings. I have found that the Electric Stampede works best with just one washer used on the outside of the bearing carrier, between the bearing and the hex nut and pin. The picture below shows the order in which I install my bearing carrier components.




Installing the included MIP output yoke is self explanatory. It simply replaces the stock plastic yoke. However make sure you use lock-tite on the grub screws that secure the new output yoke. Below is a picture of one CVD assembly installed on an Electric Stampede. Remember to allow all the lock-tite to fully cure before using the CVD's. Otherwise you may run into a problem with a grub screw backing out. Consult your lock-tite tube for recommended curing times.
