Introduction to the ESC



The ESC (Electronic Speed Control) is a big mysterious cloud to the beginner. Why is it better than a MSC (Mechanical Speed Control), what do all the specifications mean, and which one should I get are just a few of the questions that loom on the horizon for someone who has just purchased their RC truck. Hopefully this section will clear that up and turn you into an expert in no time.

The first question that someone starting out in RC has is, "why is an ESC better than a MSC?" Hopefully the information below will help you to understand the benefits of running an ESC instead of a MSC. I think by the time you are at the bottom of this page, you'll have no doubt that you do indeed, need an ESC.

Better Performance Levels

A MSC may work well for a stock motor, but the higher quality components found in most ESC's allows the use of a much lower turn motor than would be possible with a MSC. Trying to run a 13 or 14-turn motor on a MSC isn't very healthy for the life of the MSC.


Better Throttle Control

Most ESC's have more than 30 forward speeds. A MSC is likely to have only 3-5. In the case of the Traxxas MSC, it's 3 in forward and 1 in reverse. So with the ESC, you'll get a much finer control over the application of the throttle as you weave around with your truck.


Higher Efficiency

An ESC wastes less power than a MSC, especially when driving at anything other than wide open. In addition many ESC's will actually charge the battery during braking. This translates to more runtime from a battery. You can expect somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-25% more runtime with a good ESC.


Longevity

An ESC has no moving parts, unlike the MSC which is a rotating mechanism. A good ESC will often outlast your vehicle itself, if properly taken care of. The moving parts in a MSC will wear out over time.


More Compact

With a MSC, you have the MSC itself and a controlling servo. The MSC alone is pretty bulky, and the amount of space the servo takes up certainly doesn't help any. An ESC takes up a lot less room on the chassis of your truck than just the MSC itself. Then on top of that you get to remove the MSC servo altogether.


No Runaways

This is probably one of the most beneficial aspects of an ESC. If a RC vehicle equipped with a MSC runs out of radio range, the servo that controls the throttle is stuck where the receiver last heard from the radio. So if you run out of range at full throttle, the truck is going to be headed away from you at full throttle. An ESC will do exactly the opposite. If you run out of range the ESC will stop current and the truck will glide to a stop, just as if you backed out of the throttle yourself.
