What temperature range do I use?

The range of a plug helps to describe how quickly the plug will heat up, and how hot it burns. With lower nitro content fuels, you’ll want a hotter plug. With higher percentages of nitro, a cooler plug will normally work best. Keep in mind that there is no set standard in regards to rating glow plugs. So what may be one manufacturers medium, may be another manufacturer’s cold. Aside from following the manufacturer’s recommendations, the chart at the bottom of this page should help.

Generally speaking, nitro contents of less than 24% are best used with a hotter plug. From 25% up, a colder plug is preferred. When you are near the “changeover” point for swapping between plugs, you may find it more useful to use a medium range of plug.

Do I need a short or long plug?

In most circumstances, a short plug is used on motors with less than .15 cubic inches. A long plug is used on motor larger than that size. As always though, follow the recommendations of your motor’s manufacturer. Most people reading this page, will never use a short plug, but I have listed some below as a reference. A motor requiring a short plug will often work with a long plug in an emergency. If this becomes necessary, simply double-up on the washers that seal the plug to the motor head.

What’s a turbo plug?

A turbo plug has a rounded tip, and is designed to be used with specifically designed cooling heads. A turbo plug provides a much smoother upper end to the combustion chamber, and increases power. These plugs are usually more expensive, and offer no benefit when used in a situation that doesn’t call for them.
