Transmission DisassemblyThe Top Half of The Transmission HousingHaving to dive into the transmission can be an overwhelming experience for those who have bought an RTR (Ready To Run). RTR's don't come with the assembly manual, and the owner doesn't get to gain the experience that someone who built their Stampede would have. So I've created this walkthrough to help anyone who may be unfamiliar with getting to the internal transmission gears. Hopefully, if you need this, it will answer all your questions about what's involved. One of the more common tasks that involves opening the transmission is to replace a stripped idler gear. You can find more information out about it in my section on the Aluminum Idler Gear. We will approach this disassembly walkthrough on the assumption that we are changing the idler gear. This same method can be used for any other item that you would need to service that resides in the transmission.
The first thing that needs to be done is to remove the wheels. If you don't have a pit board, one of the wheels will make an excellent stand to keep the rear end of the Stampede up while you're working on it.
![]() Next remove the screw that hold the camber link to the bearing carrier. You'll need to do this for both sides.
![]() The next step is to pop loose the bottom shock mount. The easiest way to do this is to gently pry between the shock mount and the a-arm with a small screwdriver. Once again you'll need to do this for both sides.
![]() Now remove the two screws that hold the motor to the transmission housing. These screws are located to the left of the spur gear.
![]() Once these screws are removed the motor can be pulled away from the transmission housing.
![]() After removing the motor, focus your attention on the spur gear. Using the Traxxas nut driver, remove the nut that holds the spur on the shaft. It may be necessary to hold the spur with your other hand to keep it from turning. Make sure not to loose any of the discs, slipper pegs, or the spring, when removing the spur gear.
![]() Take a Phillips head screwdriver and unscrew the four screws that hold the rear body mount in place. Once they are removed you can set the body mount aside.
![]() This is what your Pede should look like so far.
![]() Once again take a Phillips head screwdriver, and this time unscrew the two screws that are in between the transmission and the rear shock tower. These hold the top side of the transmission in place.
![]() Pull the axles out from the output yoke. I'm using CVD's on my Stampede. If you're running stock yokes and axles this will look different. At this stage I would recommend leaving the other half of the stock axle attached to the plastic output yoke and remove it later, if that's what you're using. It will be much easier once the housing has been separated from the rest of the Stampede.
